What the data says: We collected 1,600 first-hand reviews from 380 Shopify operators covering 563 apps. 67% rated their app "Very Satisfied" and 92% still actively use it. Yet more than half of the operators who were not satisfied with an app still had it installed.

Most "best Shopify apps" lists are written by people who never ran a store, ranked by affiliate payout or App Store stars. This report comes from the other side: operators who use these apps every day, telling us how satisfied they are, whether they still use the app, what they love and what disappoints them.

Every review was collected inside the app store research network between January 2024 and July 2026. 58% of reviewers are store owners and 25% are e-commerce managers. 87% both used the app and influenced the decision to buy it. We report what they told us; we don't rank apps by our own opinion.

Key findings

  • Two in three operators are very satisfied with their apps. 67% rated their app "Very Satisfied", 28% "Neutral" and 5% "Not Satisfied".

  • Operators rarely uninstall. 92% still use the app they reviewed. Only 127 of 1,600 reviews came from operators who had stopped.

  • Unhappy isn't the same as uninstalled. 57% of operators who were not satisfied with an app still had it installed, and so did 87% of neutral ones.

  • A quarter of the apps operators dropped were rated very satisfied. People leave good apps when they consolidate their stack, move to a 3PL, or Shopify ships the feature natively.

  • Reviews apps are the best-rated big category (80% very satisfied). Affiliate and influencer tools are the worst (35%).

  • Missing features are the most common frustration, named in about one in three complaints. But among operators who are actually unhappy, price is the top complaint, and bugs and poor support come up about twice as often as usual.

  • Satisfaction rises with tenure: 72% of operators using an app for 3+ years are very satisfied, against 61% in the first year.

  • People who choose an app rate it higher. Team members who use a tool they didn't pick are very satisfied only 50% of the time, against 68% for those who chose it.

How satisfied are Shopify operators with their apps?

Across all 1,600 reviews, the picture is better than the App Store's angriest one-star reviews suggest, and less rosy than its five-star averages.

Half of all reviews (49%) describe the app as "critical for me to do my job." Those critical apps score far higher: 77% very satisfied, against 61% for apps operators call "valuable but not essential" and just 11% for apps they call "not very important."

The usage is concentrated. Klaviyo alone accounts for 13% of all reviews (209), while 344 of the 563 apps were reviewed once. Shopify stacks share a small core of big apps and a very long tail.

Which Shopify app categories do operators rate highest?

We grouped every app into a category by what it does. Categories with fewer than 30 reviews are marked as small samples.

Two patterns stand out. Tools that do one clear job, like reviews, SEO, analytics and inventory, score highest. Tools whose value depends on outside factors score lowest: influencer quality, ad platforms, customer support volume.

Subscriptions is the stickiest category. Only 56% of operators are very satisfied, but 97% still use their subscription app. Moving recurring billing is risky enough that operators stay put.

At the other end, among apps with 10+ reviews, the lowest scores belong to Stamped (25% very satisfied), Shopify Collabs (27%), TikTok (31%) and Tidio (40%). For the full head-to-head breakdowns, see our Shopify app comparisons.

Do operators keep apps they're unhappy with?

Yes, often. Of the 81 operators who rated an app "Not Satisfied", 46 still had it installed when they reviewed it. Ten of them still called it critical to their job.

Their reasons are practical. The app does a job nothing else in their stack does, switching would cost more time than it saves, or one customer or process depends on it:

"It’s cumbersome but adds critical functionality to our site." — Owner, verified ASR review

"I only have it due to one customer and will soon delete the app." — Owner, verified ASR review

For brands, this is the real cost hiding in most stacks: not the app you hate, but the five you're lukewarm about and never review. A yearly Shopify app stack audit is the fix.

Why do operators stop using apps they like?

Only 8% of reviews came from operators who had stopped using the app. Of those 127, 46% were neutral, 28% not satisfied, and 26% very satisfied.

That last group is the surprise. A quarter of churned apps were rated very satisfied. They left for reasons unrelated to quality: consolidating tools, changing how they fulfill orders, or Shopify and other apps absorbing the feature.

"I only switched to Attentive to get my SMS and email under one roof." — Klaviyo reviewer, verified ASR review

"Only stopped using it when we hired a 3PL." — ShipStation reviewer, verified ASR review

"Klaviyo has a built in back in stock notification." — Former back-in-stock app user, verified ASR review

For app teams, this means a happy customer isn't a safe customer. Stack consolidation is now a bigger churn risk than product quality, and it's exactly what competitive and switching research is designed to catch early.

What do Shopify operators complain about most?

We tagged every "what disappointed you" answer by theme. A complaint can fall into more than one theme, and keyword tagging is approximate, so read these as rounded shares.

Missing features annoy everyone, including very satisfied operators. One operator summed up a value app this way: "it got 80% of the way there for $15."

What separates unhappy operators is different. Price becomes their single most common complaint, and bugs and support show up about twice as often as in complaints overall. Operators forgive a missing feature. They don't forgive a bill that grows faster than the value, or a support team that disappears when something breaks.

"Penalized for growth because of their pricing structure." — Gorgias reviewer, verified ASR review

What makes operators love a Shopify app?

The "what exceeded your expectations" answers point the same way. The most common praise themes, roughly in order:

  1. Features and customization: about 4 in 10 praise answers.

  2. Ease of use: more than 1 in 3.

  3. Integration with Shopify and the rest of the stack: about 1 in 4.

  4. Automation and time saved: about 1 in 5.

  5. Support: about 1 in 6.

Direct business results (sales, AOV, retention) come up in only about one praise answer in nine. Operators judge apps first on whether they fit the way the business already works, and only then on what they return.

Does satisfaction grow the longer you use an app?

It does, though part of that is survival: apps that don't work get removed before year three.

The first year is where apps win or lose. New users are the most likely to be unhappy (8% not satisfied) and the most likely to leave.

Do people who choose an app rate it higher?

Yes. Operators who both used the app and influenced the purchase were very satisfied 68% of the time. Team members who used an app they didn't choose were very satisfied only 50% of the time.

Customer service staff stand out too: only 43% very satisfied, though that is a small group (23 reviews). The people living in a tool all day, without having picked it, are its toughest critics.

What this means for Shopify brands

  • Audit the lukewarm apps, not just the bad ones. Neutral ratings are 28% of reviews, and 87% of those apps are still installed.

  • Weigh first-year fit heavily. Satisfaction is lowest in year one; trials and onboarding decide most outcomes.

  • Involve the people who'll use it. Tools chosen without the daily user's input score 18 points lower.

  • Start with the categories operators trust. Reviews, analytics, inventory and shipping apps score highest; affiliate and ad-channel tools need the most scrutiny.

What this means for Shopify app teams

  • Your happy customers can still leave. A quarter of churned apps were rated very satisfied. Consolidation and native Shopify features are competitors too.

  • Price and support turn neutral users into churned ones. They're the themes that over-index among unhappy operators.

  • Win the first year. Satisfaction and retention are lowest for new users. That's where onboarding research pays back most.

  • Talk to the daily user, not just the buyer. Users who didn't choose the tool are 18 points less likely to be very satisfied.

These are the questions app teams bring to app store research every week: why merchants switch, what they'd pay for, and what's missing. See how app teams use merchant research, or run a project with vetted Shopify operators.

Methodology

  • Sample: 1,600 reviews from 380 Shopify operators across 386 stores, covering 563 apps. Reviews collected inside the app store research network, January 2024 to July 2026.

  • Who answered: 58% store owners, 25% e-commerce managers, the rest in marketing, operations, customer service and other roles. 87% both used the app and influenced the buying decision.

  • What we asked: overall satisfaction (Very Satisfied / Neutral / Not Satisfied), whether they still use the app, how important it is to their job, how long they've used it, what exceeded expectations and what disappointed them.

  • Categories: assigned by us based on each app's main function. Categories under 30 reviews are flagged as small samples.

  • Themes: complaint and praise answers were tagged by keyword. A review can count toward more than one theme, and shares are rounded because keyword tagging is approximate.

  • What this isn't: a ranking of every Shopify app. Apps with few reviews in our network are excluded from app-level tables, and our sample is far smaller than App Store review counts. Read it alongside each app's broader reputation.
