The data behind this page: 311 operator reviews of email and SMS apps. Email-first apps: 278 reviews · 70% very satisfied · 93% still using. SMS-first apps: 33 reviews · 52% very satisfied · 85% still using. Plus 45 Klaviyo reviews where operators talk about running SMS. Reviews collected January 2024 to July 2026 from verified operators in the app store research network.

Every Shopify brand eventually hits the same budget question: put the next dollar into email, or start texting customers? Vendors on both sides have an answer, and it usually matches what they sell.

So we looked at what operators running these channels told us. Over 300 reviews of email and SMS apps, plus dozens of operators describing how the two channels fit together. The short version: operators are happier with email, use SMS on top of it rather than instead of it, and the cost of texting is the most common complaint.

Quick answers

Should a Shopify store start with email or SMS? Email, based on what operators tell us. Email apps score higher on satisfaction (70% very satisfied against 52% for SMS apps), and most operators who run a dedicated SMS app also run an email platform.

Is SMS more expensive than email? Per message, yes. Operators describe paying per send, plus carrier fees, extra for images and emojis, and in some cases minimum spends or long contracts. Email costs mostly scale with the size of your list.

When should I add SMS? When you have steady traffic to grow a subscriber list, and offers that benefit from a fast, direct message. Operators warn that SMS needs a steady flow of new visitors to pay off.

Can I run email and SMS in one platform? Yes. Klaviyo, Omnisend and Attentive all offer both, and operators like having one customer view. But many Klaviyo operators say its SMS still trails specialist SMS apps.

Is email or SMS better for Shopify stores?

On satisfaction, email wins clearly. Across 278 reviews of email-first apps, 70% of operators are very satisfied and 93% still use their app. Across 33 reviews of dedicated SMS apps, those numbers drop to 52% and 85%.

The bigger signal is how operators combine them. Of the 30 operators who reviewed a dedicated SMS app, 24 also reviewed an email platform. SMS is almost always the second channel, added on top of email, not a replacement for it.

Email also carries real weight in revenue for some brands. One owner told us email drives most of their online sales, and another said email and SMS together make up more than 20% of company revenue.

"Email marketing is responsible for 60+% of our online revenue." — Owner, verified ASR review

That doesn't make SMS a bad channel. Some operators see stronger conversion from texts than from email. But it costs more to run, and operators are pickier about whether it's paying back.

Why do operators rate SMS lower than email?

The reasons are consistent across the SMS reviews in our network.

Cost. Pricing came up in 13 of the 33 SMS app reviews, more than any other complaint. Operators describe a cost per send plus carrier service fees, extra charges for images and emojis, credit limits, minimum quarterly spends, and in one case a long-term contract they wanted out of.

Returns that fade. Three operators described SMS performance slipping over time. One long-time owner put it down to more brands texting the same customers, which they said has diluted returns.

"It is an expensive way to communicate to your customers now" — Owner, verified ASR review

Attribution they don't fully trust. Four operators said SMS apps credit themselves too generously, calling attribution broad, liberal or inflated.

It needs traffic. SMS lists grow from visitors opting in. Two Emotive reviewers said results depend on paid ads or a steady flow of new visitors.

"it needs paid advertising or a steady flow of new traffic to be effective." — Marketing, verified ASR review

What operators praise is just as clear. Support came up positively in 11 of the 33 reviews, especially dedicated account managers. List growth tools, like two-tap sign-up forms and popups, came up in 7.

What does SMS actually cost compared to email?

We won't quote list prices here, because they change often and depend on volume. What operators describe is how the two are billed, and that shapes your budget more than any single rate.

What operators complain about

Cost rising as the list grows

Cost per send, unclear billing, ROI fading

The practical difference: email bills mostly track the size of your list, so keeping the list clean is the main lever. With SMS, every campaign has a direct cost, so segmenting who gets each text matters more. One operator said they're constantly working out which segments keep their ROI goals intact, because each send is a little pricey.

Billing clarity matters too. One owner moved their SMS from Klaviyo to Postscript specifically because Postscript's billing was easier to follow.

Run email or SMS for a Shopify brand? App teams want your numbers. Email and SMS are two of the most competitive app categories on Shopify, and the teams building in them pay operators $50 to $500 per call to understand what works and what's overpriced. When does SMS start to pay off?

From what operators describe, SMS earns its place under a few conditions:

  • You have steady traffic. SMS lists are built from visitors who opt in. Without a flow of new traffic, operators say the list stalls.

  • You have time-sensitive offers. One Postscript owner values getting a message out to customers within minutes of having an idea.

  • You want to recover carts. Operators running SMS apps mention cart recovery as a core use.

  • Your audience welcomes texts. Not every audience does. One Klaviyo operator dropped SMS because it felt too invasive for their customers.

"We don't utilize SMS. It is not a good fit for our business/audience." — E-commerce Manager, verified ASR review

If those don't fit yet, the operators in our network would say put the effort into email flows first, such as welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back, and add SMS once the list and traffic are there. Should you run email and SMS in one platform or two?

Operators split on this, and both camps have a point.

One platform. Running both channels in one tool means one set of segments, one customer profile and simpler flows. One operator praised how easy it was to bundle SMS with email in Klaviyo, and another said using Klaviyo's SMS saved them from paying for a separate SMS platform. Another switched to Attentive to get SMS and email under one roof.

Two platforms. The case for a specialist is performance. Of the 45 Klaviyo reviews that mention SMS, roughly 20 criticize the SMS side, most often for cost or for trailing dedicated SMS apps on features.

"the SMS part of the app is still behind other services such as Attentive" — Marketing, verified ASR review

The catch with two platforms is coordination. One Recart operator wished their SMS app connected more tightly with Klaviyo, so a customer who ignores an email could move on to a text.

A rough way to decide: if you're starting SMS, try it inside your email platform first. Move to a specialist if SMS becomes a channel you want to push hard and the gaps start costing you.

Does SMS need separate consent from email?

Yes. A customer who signs up for emails hasn't agreed to receive texts. Shopify records email and SMS marketing consent separately for each customer, and SMS rules on consent and timing vary by country.

Operators lean on their SMS provider for this. One Attentive operator said its compliance features help them stay on top of opt-ins and regulations, and another said Attentive handled the legal side better than other tools they'd tried. Whatever you use, check how it collects and records SMS consent before your first campaign.

FAQ

Does SMS convert better than email? For some brands, yes. Two operators in our network said SMS converts better for them than email or Klaviyo's SMS. But SMS also costs more per message, and several operators said its results have softened over time.

Is Klaviyo SMS good enough, or do I need Attentive or Postscript? Klaviyo SMS works for many brands and keeps both channels in one tool. But roughly 20 of the 45 Klaviyo reviews that mention SMS criticize it for cost or features, and some of those operators moved their SMS to a specialist.

How do I keep SMS costs under control? Send to segments, not your whole list. Watch for charges on images, emojis and longer messages. And read the contract for minimum spends before you sign.

Should small stores use SMS? Only once traffic is steady enough to grow a list. Operators with low traffic said SMS struggled to pay off, so email flows are usually the better first investment.

Can I trust SMS attribution numbers? Treat them with care. Four operators in our network said SMS apps over-credit themselves. Compare against your own Shopify data or an independent attribution tool.
