The data behind this page: 34 operator reviews of 8 Shopify subscription apps · 56% very satisfied · 97% still using. 14 of the 15 operators who aren't very satisfied still run the same app. Reviews collected February 2024 to May 2026 from verified operators in the app store research network.

Your subscription app is the one app you can't swap out on a quiet Tuesday. It holds your recurring revenue, your subscribers' payment details and the portal they use to skip, pause or cancel. Get the move wrong and customers feel it on their next billing date.

That's why operators stay put, even when they aren't happy. Below is what operators in our network told us about staying, switching and what went wrong when a migration failed. Then we cover what actually moves between apps, and how to switch without losing subscribers.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to switch subscription apps on Shopify? There's rarely a single fee. The real costs are paying two apps during the overlap, your team's time, extra support tickets, subscribers lost to failed payment migrations, and the history that doesn't carry over.

Do subscribers have to re-enter their card details? Usually not, if your payment methods can be moved. Migration guides from Loop and Recurpay say cards stored in Shopify, or in gateways like Stripe, Braintree, Authorize.net and PayPal Express, can generally be carried over. Loop lists Adyen as an exception for token migration.

How long does a subscription app migration take? It depends on the vendor and your setup. Skio's guide for moves between stores says 1 to 3 weeks. Whatever the timeline, plan to keep the old app installed and paused for at least one full billing cycle.

Is switching worth it? Operators in our network have seen both outcomes. One who moved from Recharge to Loop reported lower costs and less churn. Another said they lost about $200k in subscription revenue in the year after a migration went wrong.

Why do Shopify brands stay with subscription apps they're not happy with?

Subscription apps have one of the widest gaps in our database between satisfaction and staying power. Only 56% of operators are very satisfied with theirs, yet 97% still use it. Of the 15 operators who rated their app neutral or not satisfied, 14 haven't left.

These aren't new installs either. Over half of the operators (18 of 34) have run their subscription app for more than two years. Almost half (16 of 34) called it critical to doing their job.

The frustration is mostly about price. Five of 16 Recharge reviewers raised cost, from premium pricing to features locked behind higher plans. Two said outright that they're open to alternatives. Both still use Recharge.

"Recharge continues to be priced at a premium vs. other subscription vendors." — E-commerce Manager, verified ASR review

Our reviews don't ask operators why they stayed, so we can't say it's all switching cost. But the stories from operators who did switch, below, show why staying is the default.

What does switching subscription apps actually cost?

Most of the cost of switching is indirect. Here's where it shows up, based on vendor migration guides and what operators in our network reported.

Cost

What it looks like

How to limit it

Overlap

Paying both apps while the old one stays installed for a billing cycle

Keep the overlap to one full billing cycle, then uninstall

Team time

Exports, mapping product variants, testing, checking contracts

Ask the new app what its migration team handles

Failed payment migration

Subscribers whose cards don't transfer get a "re-enter your payment details" email, and some never do

Confirm where your cards are stored before you commit

Customer confusion

New portal, new emails, more support tickets

Tell subscribers what changes, and update portal links in your email flows

Lost history

Vendor guides say analytics and LTV history don't migrate, and migrated customers can show as new

Export reports before you start

What happened when operators in our network switched?

Four operators described moving their subscriptions in their reviews. Three moves went well and one went badly. In the good ones, operators credited the help they got during the move. In the bad one, the trouble started with the migration itself.

The good switch: Recharge to Loop. One owner who moved from Recharge to Loop said it saved them a significant amount of money and noticeably reduced subscriber churn. They described the transition as smooth and credited Loop's proactive support.

"We switched to Loop from Recharge, and the benefits have been incredible." — Owner, verified ASR review

The bad switch: a move to Yotpo Subscriptions. Another owner told us the migration went badly and the business never recovered. They reported heavy churn and about $200k in lost subscription revenue in the following year. Subscribers struggled with the new setup and ordered duplicate subscriptions, which meant refunds and more tickets. Their customer service workload rose 38% year over year. They also noted the app took a percentage of renewals from subscribers they'd brought with them. They've since stopped using it for new orders.

"The migration was horrible and we have never recovered." — Owner, verified ASR review

Two smaller stories. A newer Recharge customer said setup was much easier than with their previous provider. A Bold Subscriptions operator credited the vendor's white-glove help when moving from its older version.

One bad migration doesn't make an app bad, and one good one doesn't make it right for you. What the stories share is simpler: the move itself is the risk, so judge a new app partly on how it handles the migration.

What moves over when you switch, and what doesn't?

On Shopify, a migration means recreating your subscriptions inside the new app. Shopify's developer docs describe the order: customers first, then payment methods, then the subscription contracts, which hold the product, plan and payment method.

Usually moves over, with the new app's help:

  • Active subscriptions, recreated as new contracts

  • Customers and their addresses

  • Payment methods, if they're stored somewhere the new app can reach

  • Next billing dates, if they're mapped correctly

Usually doesn't, or needs extra work:

  • Analytics and LTV history. Export it first.

  • Customer "first order" dates. Migrated subscribers can show up as new customers.

  • Prepaid and gift subscriptions. Vendors treat these as special cases. Loop asks for a week's notice for custom cases like prepaid, bundles and variant swaps.

  • Changes made in the old app after the export. Skio's guide warns these aren't carried over, so freeze edits during the move.

  • Your subscription count. Apps group products differently, so the number can drop without losing anyone. Loop notes its count is often lower than Recharge's for this reason.

Payment methods are the part that decides how painful a move is. Loop's guide says cards held in Stripe, Braintree, Authorize.net or PayPal Express can be imported into Shopify's vault, but billing keeps running through the old gateway until each customer updates their card in Shopify. Adyen isn't supported for that import. Ask the new app to confirm your exact setup before you sign.

How to switch subscription apps without losing subscribers

Pulled together from vendor migration guides and what went right, and wrong, for operators in our network:

  1. Find out where your cards are stored. Shopify Payments, Stripe, Braintree or another gateway. This decides whether subscribers have to re-enter anything.

  2. Export your history. Pull LTV, cohort and order reports from the old app before anything changes.

  3. Ask the new app what its migration team does. Loop, Skio and Recurpay all publish migration processes. Ask who maps variants, who checks the data and who cancels the old contracts.

  4. Test on a small batch. Recurpay suggests 10 to 20 records first, then check every field against the old app.

  5. Freeze edits during cutover. Changes in the old app after the export won't follow you.

  6. Watch anyone due to bill within 7 days of cutover. Recurpay's guide calls these the highest-risk records.

  7. Cancel the old contracts as part of the move. Loop's team cancels migrated contracts on the old platform in bulk, so nobody is charged twice.

  8. Keep the old app installed and paused for one full billing cycle. Don't delete it on cutover day.

  9. Tell subscribers what's changing. New portal, new emails, same products. Update every portal link in your email and SMS flows.

  10. Watch failed payments and tickets for the first cycle. That's where a bad migration shows up first. Our guide to reducing subscription churn covers recovering failed payments.

Where do operators go when they leave Recharge?

Recharge is the most-reviewed subscription app in our network, and every Recharge reviewer still uses it. Here's how the alternatives operators reviewed compare. Samples outside Recharge are small, so read them as directional.

Should you switch subscription apps?

Operators in our network tolerate a lot before they move, and given what a bad migration can cost, that's understandable. The ones who switched successfully had a concrete reason: a meaningful cost difference, or features they needed that their app didn't offer.

Switching tends to make sense when the price gap per order is large at your volume, when features you need are locked behind a plan you won't pay for, or when reliability problems are already costing you subscribers. It makes less sense when the problem is a setting or a workflow your current app can fix with its own support team.

Either way, get a written migration plan from the new app before you commit. That's the part that separated the good switches from the bad one.

FAQ

Will subscribers be charged twice during a migration? They can be if contracts stay active in both apps. Make sure the old contracts are cancelled as part of the cutover. Loop, for example, cancels migrated contracts on the old platform in bulk to prevent double charges.

Will I lose my subscription analytics? Usually, yes. Vendor guides say analytics and LTV history don't migrate, so export them before you start.

Can I migrate prepaid subscriptions? Often, but they need special handling. Vendors ask for notice on prepaid, bundle and gift subscriptions, and some can't migrate certain types at all. Confirm with the new app first.

Does switching apps change my subscribers' portal? Yes. The portal and notification emails come from the new app, so update every link in your flows and tell subscribers what to expect.

What about Shopify's own Subscriptions app? It's another destination worth comparing. We don't have operator reviews of it yet, so it isn't in our table.
