Do you need an order printer app at all?

Start with what's already free. Shopify's admin has an editable packing slip template, and Shopify Order Printer prints custom invoices and order documents at no cost. For a store printing packing slips and the occasional invoice, that may be all you need.

The operators in our network added a third-party app when they hit one of these:

• Invoices customers can get themselves. Automatic PDF invoices in order emails, or a link in the customer's account, instead of digging one up by hand.

• Wholesale paperwork. Proforma invoices, credit notes, HS codes and country of origin. One B2B operator told us Shopify's built-in options weren't enough for their wholesale customers.

• Tax and accounting formats. Region-specific invoices, such as GST invoices in India or DATEV exports for German accounting.

• Selling internationally. Invoices in multiple languages and currencies.

• Volume. Generating and exporting large batches without doing them one by one.

If none of those apply, start with Shopify Order Printer and only add an app when you outgrow it.

1. Shopify Order Printer — the free option, built by Shopify

Shopify Order Printer is Shopify's own app for printing order documents from templates. It replaced the original Order Printer app, which Shopify says "has been deprecated and is no longer supported or maintained." The new app has the same core job, plus template previews and ongoing updates, at no cost.

If you still run the old app, migrating is quick. Install Shopify Order Printer, open Templates, and click Import to bring over your custom templates. Shopify updates the Liquid variables in those templates where it can, so preview each one before you rely on it. Keep the old app installed until the import is done.

The common thread is flexibility. It handles invoices with specific prices, discounts and refunds, and branded order emails.

If your accountant or tax rules need a specific format, a general invoice app may not cut it. Two operators in our network use region-specific apps, with opposite results.

Match the app to the document problem you actually have:

• You print packing slips and the odd invoice: Shopify's built-in packing slips and Shopify Order Printer, both free.

• You want invoices customized down to the line: Order Printer Pro, if someone on the team can handle template code or will lean on its support.

• You sell wholesale or ship across borders: Sufio for B2B paperwork, or Simple Invoice for multiple languages and currencies.

• Customers keep emailing for invoice copies: an app that adds invoice links to orders, like Vify.

• Your accountant needs a specific format: a region-specific app, checked against your accountant's requirements.

How do I move from the old Order Printer app to Shopify Order Printer? Install Shopify Order Printer, open Templates, click Import and confirm. Both apps need to be installed for the import to work. Preview each template afterwards, since some Liquid variables may need manual fixes.
