Veracity Hire, a professional recruiting firm, is partnering with our client that is a fast growing, venture-backed consumer wellness brand to identify a experienced Director of Shopify Engineering to lead and own its Shopify fommerce platform.
This is not simply a storefront or theme-develpment role. We are looking for a senior a engineering leader who understands the Shopify ecosystem end to end—including catalog and store configuration, the app stack, subscription commerce, and the integrations connecting Shopify with fulfillment, operations, finance, marketing, and customer support.
The Director will lead an in-house Engineering and QA team, own the technical roadmap for the platform in partnership with Product, and serve as the technical leader for teams across the organization that rely on Shopify.
Experience working in-house within a lean, high-growth environment is strongly preferred.
Responsibilities
Own the Shopify platform end to end, including catalog and product data architecture, store settings, Shopify Markets, checkout configuration, and overall platform health.
Lead subscription commerce configuration through Recharge, including plans and pricing, discount logic, customer portal experiences, promotions, and international markets.
Build, maintain, and evolve integrations connecting Shopify with fulfillment, inventory, supply chain and logistics, accounting and revenue recognition, marketing, CRM, and other critical business systems.
Oversee Shopify APIs, webhooks, app extensions, and custom applications and integrations.
Manage and continuously improve the Shopify app ecosystem, evaluating third-party solutions and making thoughtful build-versus-buy decisions.
Guide Shopify theme development in partnership with an experienced engineering team with strong Liquid expertise.
Own metaobject and metafield data models and help maintain a flexible CMS experience that allows non-engineering teams to efficiently manage content.
Partner with Growth and Retention Marketing on conversion tracking, marketing pixels, product catalog synchronization, lifecycle and CRM integrations, and related data flows.
Partner across Customer Support, Supply Chain, Logistics, Accounting, Marketing, Product, and other functions to ensure customer, order, subscription, and financial data flows reliably across systems.
Help maintain the storefront in alignment with WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
Help lead an AI-enabled development practice, using modern tools such as Cursor and Linear while maintaining strong standards for code quality, review, testing, security, and deployment.
Lead sprint planning and delivery, including backlog grooming, scoping, capacity planning, prioritization, and accountability.
Lead, hire, and develop the in-house Engineering and QA organization.
Manage relationships with technology vendors, agencies, app providers, and other external partners.
This is a leadership role, but the Director will remain technically close to the platform. The successful candidate should be comfortable reviewing code, running the codebase, troubleshooting production issues, implementing a quick fix when necessary, and effectively directing technical work across the team.
Qualifications
8+ years of software engineering experience.
4+ years of deep Shopify platform experience spanning administration and development, including catalog and product data architecture, store and checkout configuration, Shopify Markets, and app stack management for a high-volume brand.
5+ years of engineering management experience, including hiring, developing engineers, reviewing work, setting expectations, and owning team-level delivery.
Strong experience with Shopify Admin and Storefront APIs, webhooks, app extensions, and custom Shopify applications and integrations.
Experience integrating Shopify with operational and financial systems.
Strong Liquid theme development fluency.
Hands-on experience supporting Growth and Retention Marketing as a technical partner.
Ability to serve as the technical partner for multiple non-technical teams, including Marketing, Customer Support, Supply Chain, Logistics, Accounting, and Product.
Strong Agile fundamentals, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, scoping, estimation, and delivery management.
Strong communication skills and the ability to translate business needs into sound technical solutions.
Experience working in-house within a lean, high-growth environment is strongly preferred.
Experience managing external contractors or agencies alongside an in-house team is a plus.
