AI SUMMARY

Data Engineer at Troubadour (B Corp bag and accessories brand, 15x growth in five years, known for its laptop backpacks), London-based at the Fitzrovia headquarters, reporting to the COO. You own the data layer that the business runs on: BigQuery pipelines, schema and data quality across Shopify, 3PLs, Amazon and finance, plus master SKU data feeding the site, wholesale portals, Amazon and finance. You also build vendor scorecard feeds (SP-API, 3PLs, Flexport), set up shared connections and an agent registry for the company's AI agents, and run internal systems and access. Fit if you have: 3+ yrs hands-on with data and systems in a retail or ecommerce business, essential BigQuery, fluent SQL, a modelling tool like dbt, Python or similar scripting, API experience, and evidence of building with AI. Right to work in the UK required, no visa sponsorship. Salary not stated. The application asks for one example of a pipeline or automation you built.

Data Engineer | London | Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Join us. We’re still building.

We make bags and accessories for the people building the future. Engineers, founders, designers, makers. People in the arena, doing the work, often without proof.

We’ve grown 15x in the last five years. B Corp certified. Wirecutter’s pick for best laptop backpack.

We’re building operations with AI at its core, and we mean it. Our operating layer runs on BigQuery, our first agents ship this quarter with our build partner, and the model is simple: a small team, serious volume, and machines doing the coordination. Every seat owns and runs its own agents. You own the rails that make that possible: the pipelines, the one source of truth, the standards, and, over time, the AI capability itself as we bring it in-house.

Reporting to our COO, you own the data and systems layer everything else stands on. Every buy we commit, every agent we run, every promise we keep to a customer sits on data you keep honest.

Small team. Real ownership. You’ll build, run and fix the things the rest of the business runs on, shoulder to shoulder with the operators who use them. No layers, no translators.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the data layer: BigQuery pipelines, schema and data quality across Shopify, our 3PLs, Amazon and finance. When the data is clean, everything downstream just works.

  • Keep the numbers honest: agree definitions with the people who own them, and make sure sales, margin and stock figures tie back to source so finance can rely on them.

  • Build the vendor scorecard feeds (LSM via SP-API, our 3PLs, Flexport), so every vendor review runs on our numbers, not theirs.

  • Own master SKU data: one source of truth for style and SKU records, feeding the site, wholesale portals, Amazon and finance.

  • Own the rails and the standards: shared connections and credentials, the agent registry (every agent, its owner, its last check), documentation and handover, set with our external partner and then brought in-house. Seat owners maintain their own agents; you make them able to.

  • Run internal systems: access, tooling, file systems.

Who You Are

  • 3+ years hands-on with data and systems, in a retail or ecommerce business selling physical product across its own site, marketplaces like Amazon and wholesale. You’ve built pipelines that mattered.

  • Hands-on BigQuery experience is essential, along with fluent SQL and a modelling tool such as dbt. You wrangle APIs and write the scripts (Python or similar) that hold it together.

  • AI-first with evidence: you’re already building with it, you’ve helped non-technical colleagues build and maintain their own automations, and you enjoyed it.

  • Comfortable picking up systems you didn’t build and explaining trade-offs to people who aren’t technical. You’ll push back when a number doesn’t add up.

  • Systems-minded and low-ego. Documented, reliable and handed over well beats clever.

  • Based in or able to work from London (Fitzrovia), with the existing right to work in the UK. We’re unable to offer visa sponsorship.

Why Troubadour

We’ve grown 15x in the last five years. The next phase is bigger still, and everyone we hire has a hand in shaping it.

We’re a small team. Curious. Hands-on. We care about doing things well, and about the people doing them. High standards without high drama. We disagree out loud. We back each other up. The people who thrive here treat the work seriously and themselves a little less so.

Our headquarters is in Fitzrovia, London, and our store is on Beak Street in Soho. We have an office in Boston. The rest of the team works remotely, and we get together whenever we can. We look after our people properly. The basics and more.

1.3+ years hands-on with data and systems, in a retail or ecommerce business selling physical product across its own site, marketplaces like Amazon and wholesale.
2.Hands-on BigQuery experience is essential, along with fluent SQL and a modelling tool such as dbt.
3.AI-first with evidence: you’re already building with it, you’ve helped non-technical colleagues build and maintain their own automations, and you enjoyed it.
4.Comfortable picking up systems you didn’t build and explaining trade-offs to people who aren’t technical. You’ll push back when a number doesn’t add up.
5.Systems-minded and low-ego. Documented, reliable and handed over well beats clever.

Questions you can expect in the interview

Drawn from this posting. None of them repeat on another job.

1.You would own BigQuery pipelines across Shopify, 3PLs, Amazon and finance. Tell us about a pipeline you built that mattered, and what used to break before it existed.
2.The posting asks you to make sure sales, margin and stock figures tie back to source so finance can rely on them. How do you reconcile a number that two systems report differently?
3.You would own master SKU data feeding the site, wholesale portals, Amazon and finance. What goes wrong when one SKU record has to serve four consumers, and how do you stop it?
4.The role includes an agent registry and the rails that let seat owners run their own AI agents. What would you want to know about every agent, and what would you automate checking?
5.You would explain trade-offs to people who are not technical and push back when a number does not add up. Tell us about a time you told someone their number was wrong.
